Lincoln Cathedral - May 29, 2009

One of our favorites! The west end of the cathedral is built around an earlier Norman structure that is as much fortress as church. The entrance to the living quarters is well off the ground and had no stair to access it. You either needed a ladder or some sort of hoist to get in. This arrangement is much like the one that survived at St. Catherine's in the Sinai into the 19th century.
